Do slate roofs need underlayment?

Underlayment may be used on a slate roof during the time the slate tiles and the flashings are being installed. However, a properly installed slate roof does not need underlayment. If a slate roof leaks, it is because there is an issue with the installation of slate tiles and flashing. Underlayment on a slate roof may occasionally be used to provide an extra layer of insulation or for cushion during the installation process.
