What is the difference between a hip and a gable?

On a hipped roof, all four sides slope all the way down to the top of the exterior walls of a building. A gabled house has only two sloping sides, and the remaining two sides of the house form a triangle at the top of the roof ridge. The gables may be at the sides of the house or at the front facing the street.
