What is the difference between a shingle and a shake?

The difference is in the methods used to shape the wood. Specifically, wooden shingles are always sawn into shape, whereas shakes are not only sawn but can also be split or a combination thereof. Shingles are also generally thinner at the butt than a shake. They are otherwise similar in function.
